MEPCO Privatization 2026: Latest Official Update

MEPCO has not been sold or transferred to a private owner. As of September 20, 2026, the latest official development is that the Government of Pakistan is hiring a Financial Adviser for private-sector participation in MEPCO and LESCO.

The Privatisation Commission published its latest invitation for Technical & Financial Proposals on September 16. The related PPRA tender, TS0000012007E, is currently listed as a published corrigendum with a closing deadline of September 28, 2026 at 3:00 PM.

What has actually happened with MEPCO?

The process took a formal step forward on August 11, 2026, when the Privatisation Commission Board declared the privatisation of Multan Electric Power Company (MEPCO) and Lahore Electric Supply Company (LESCO) as major transactions.

The Commission said this status requires the appointment of a Financial Adviser under the applicable privatisation regulations. It also identified LESCO and MEPCO as the fourth batch of power distribution companies (DISCOs) selected for the government’s privatisation programme.

That August decision was followed by the Financial Adviser procurement now underway.

So there are two very different facts to keep separate:

  • MEPCO privatisation is moving forward.
  • MEPCO has not yet been privatised.

The current tender is for professional financial advisory services. It is not an announcement that a private buyer has acquired MEPCO.

Has a buyer for MEPCO been selected?

There is no buyer named in the current Privatisation Commission or PPRA notices.

There is also no official announcement in these notices confirming a sale price, ownership-transfer date or completed handover of MEPCO to a private company.

The active procurement concerns a Financial Adviser for private-sector participation in MEPCO and LESCO. Until a later official announcement changes that position, describing MEPCO as already “sold” or “private” would be premature.

Does the privatization process change your MEPCO bill now?

Nothing in the current Financial Adviser notice announces an immediate change to your MEPCO reference number, consumer ID, billing cycle, due date or payment process.

It also does not announce a new electricity tariff.

That distinction matters because privatization proceedings and monthly electricity-bill adjustments are different issues. Changes appearing on a September bill should therefore not automatically be attributed to the privatization process.

If you only need to view the bill currently issued against your connection, use the MEPCO bill online checker already available on this site.

Likewise, changes in the physical appearance of the bill are covered separately in our New MEPCO Bill Format 2026 guide rather than being a consequence of this September privatization development.

MEPCO is entering this process after a major financial turnaround

Another detail is easy to miss in coverage of the privatization story.

The Power Division reported in July that MEPCO moved from a Rs36 billion loss in FY2023-24 to a Rs1.05 billion profit in FY2025-26.

According to the same government release, distribution losses fell from 15.2% to 11.9%, while recovery improved from 98.6% to 100.8%. The Ministry attributed the change to measures including an independent Board of Directors, performance monitoring, automation, meterization and greater focus on consumer service.

These figures are useful context because the current privatization process is taking place while MEPCO is also undergoing operational and governance reforms.

What should MEPCO consumers watch next?

The most important immediate date is September 28, 2026, the current deadline for the Financial Adviser procurement.

After that, the reliable way to track the process is through fresh notices from the Privatisation Commission and PPRA rather than claims about an unnamed buyer or an assumed completion date.

A meaningful next update would be an official notice confirming a change in the tender deadline, appointment of the Financial Adviser or another formal transaction milestone.

Until then, the position is straightforward:

MEPCO is part of an active privatization process, but the company has not been officially announced as sold or transferred to a private owner.
